Moody Beaches - Modes
Words by Francis Tait
Friday 3rd August, 2018

To mark the release of their debut LP Weird Friends released via Poison City Records today, Moody Beaches have dropped a film clip for ‘Modes’ - one of the more sinister moments on the album with a pretty unnerving clip to match.
'Modes' is the third single of grungey post-punk off the brand-spanking-new debut LP from Moody Beaches, who have spent the better part of the last two years relentlessly gigging around Melbourne. With each single getting a little more dark and brooding than the last, the first few seconds of interweaving, trance-like bass and guitar make it pretty clear that ‘Modes' is following trend. The gradual addition of throbbing drums, Anna Lienhop’s wailing vocals (that you may recognise from La Bastard) and a chorus that’s as singable as it is unnerving make ‘Modes' a late highlight from Weird Friends.

Shot on Friday the 13th, the Stephanie Peters directed clip for ‘Modes' doesn’t at any point shy away from the sinister vibes either, utilising the woods at night, hooded robes and plenty of handheld camera horror movie charm to tie in with the brooding and hypnotic qualities of ‘Modes’ seamlessly. It’s the sort of clip you’d hope doesn’t pop up too early morning as it features on Rage over the weekend.
